Occasionally, you wonder how things go viral, how a particular site or piece of content starts to steamroll and gain popularity. Well, this morning, I think I saw the process firsthand.

Photographic creativity ebbs and flows like a tide. And what contributes to those ebbs is a combination of your own complacency and something I call the “What’s worked for me lately” factor.

It happens like this: You stumble upon a new technique or method that works well for you, and when you find that it gives you great results, you throw it in to your bag of tricks for the next time. And the time after that. And the time after that.

Pretty soon, you’ve shot nearly everything for the past two months with the same approach. Your imagery starts to get stale, or at the very least you find yourself running out of inspiration because you’ve suddenly grown tired of the same old method.

I took this photo during a particularly memorable backcountry ski trip a few years ago in Colorado. When I look at it, I can very distinctly remember what it was like to be out there with my four friends that day.

I remember just how big the flakes were and how they kept falling in between my glasses and my eyes. I remember the near silence that the forest takes on under heavily falling snow. I remember the soft trudging sound that eight pairs of skis make (ten if you count mine) as they skin across the terrain. I remember the fresh smell of wilderness where there is not a house or vehicle for miles in any direction.

And most of all, I just remember the feeling of being out in the woods with my companions as I snapped photo after photo of what has become one of my favorite scenes.

But that’s because I was there.
